Host & Support Sites

A community-based response to homelessness

Adapting During COVID

Due to the pandemic, Family Promise North Shore Boston made the decision back in March to pause the rotational shelter model (described below). Currently we are still hosting families but in a static site apartment. We will be using this static site model until we feel it is safe to return to a rotational model within our host sites. Please contact our staff to learn ways you can support Family Promise during this unprecedented time!

Volunteers changing lives

Family Promise North Shore Boston is a partnership of local organizations, congregations, and colleges, helping families facing homelessness. Our host sites provide lodging, meals and hospitality to families in need. For families in the program, each day begins with breakfast at a host site with volunteers, followed by a bus ride to our Day Center. In the evening, guests return to the host site, where volunteers provide dinner and spend some quality time. The evening hours are for homework, relaxing and family fun time, as they would be with any family. Each day ends with the family all together, under one roof.

Host Sites

Local houses of worship and colleges provide temporary overnight lodging in otherwise unused spaces in their buildings. A host site team of volunteers may be involved with the following:

  • Cooking and hosting dinner
  • Spending the evening with families, talking, tutoring kids or playing games
  • Sleeping overnight in the host facility
  • Coordinating children’s crafts & activities
  • Donating necessary supplies for the hosting week
  • Setting up and breaking down guest families’ rooms

Manageable Commitment

It doesn’t take much to become a host site!

  • Families stay overnight, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 AM, not 24 hours a day
  • Each site hosts families for just one week, four times a year
  • Guests consist of only two to four families   (14 children & adults max)
  • A Family Promise driver transports the families to and from the host facility. Families store their personal belongings at the Day Center

We need your help! Can your organization become a host site or offer volunteer support?

Support Organizations

Volunteers from the community will cook and serve meals, play with children or help them with homework and show compassion and respect to the families in the program, while sharing a sense of community.

Volunteer shifts are only two hours long, four times a year – Many find that these are two of the most rewarding hours they have ever experienced!

“There are so many problems beyond our grasp, yet this is one time we can make a difference in our own back yard.”

~Rev. Michael J. Duda

Senior Pastor, First Church Wenham

We thank our dedicated volunteers!
